Legendary description: Lord Siva did 8 valorous deeds in 8 different places. This is one of them. The Lord killed a demon called Andhakasura in this place. Hence this temple is one of the Ashta- Veera lakshnam.
There was an Asura called Andhakasura who was giving lot of trouble to devas & Rishi's . They could not bear his misdeeds. Hence devas and Rishis went to Lord Siva's abode Kailash and they told all their grievances to Him. Lord Siva told them " go to thiru-kovilore and do penance. Then I will come in time to that place and rescue all of you from the dangerous demon."
Accordingly all Devas and Rishis did penanace for a long time. Siva appeared and he killed the demon. Andha-kasura and saved devas and Rishis. Lord siva blessed them and bestowed them with plenty of boons From that time the Lord here is called Andhakanthar. This temple has many stone inscriptions  proclaiming  its vast history.
