Legend: Once the creator Brahma was very proud of his creations. To control this nature Lord Siva took back all his powers. Brahma realized this he did siva-pooja for long years and got back all his power in this place. Happly when he was returning to his place he planted a jackfruit tree. That tree was yielding one fruit every day.
Noticing this wonder Monarch RajaRaja Chozlan was sending this fruit to Chidhambaram for abishagam to Lord Nataraja and he used to get the prasadam from there. This was the daily routine.
One day the priest got annoyed and cut that tree. The monarch came to know about this and he ordered to his minister to expel the priest from the kingdom. The king also accompanied the minister.
When he returned to his country he saw a golden desert chameleon and it disappeared into an anthill. The king ordered to destroy the anthill to find the chameleon. But he found blood from a chameleon's tail. When the king saw this he became unconscious. He heard an ariel voice that asked the king to build a siva temple. Accordingly the king built a big Siva temple here and endowed much wealth to it.
