Legend: Daksha did not invite his daughter Parvati and his son-in-law Lord Siva to the yagna that he conducted. Being vexed at the disrespectful attitude of Daksha towards him, Lord Siva sent Veerabhadra to go and desecrate the sacrifice fire at the yagna conducted by Daksha. Lord Siva told parvathi not to attend the Yagna celebration by her father Daksha-Prajabathi. However the Devi attended the yaga. While Veerabhadra was desecrating the yagna a pea-hen got injured and ran to Parvati Devi and took refuge under her.
After everything was over, Parvati Devi repented very much for having disobeyed the Lord. To wash off the sin, she entered into the 'Yogagni'. At the time of entering into the fire she thought about the pea-hen to which she had given refuge and so in the next birth she took the form of a peahen and came to this place.
The Devi did penance for long years and at last she attained re-union with Lord Siva. Hence this place came to be known as Mayuram or Mayavaram (Mayuram means pea-hen). This temple has other names also. They are Suda-vanam, Sikliandi-puram, Brahma-puram, and Brahma-vanam and so on
The Very Important significance of this place is that there are five Lord Viswanadha temples and a Medha Dakshana moorty temples located around this Mayoora Nadha's temple. This can not be seen in any other place.
