The saint who sang hymns on the Lord:
Thiru-gnana-sambandhar and Sundarar
Legend:
Once this place was like a desert. People were suffering for water. A sage called Udhathi came to this place to do penance. All the people went to him and told their grievances. The sage felt very sad and consoled them.He did penance to Siva for many years to bring ganga to that place. The Lord appeared before the sage and asked him for the purpose of this penance. The sage expressed his wish to the Lord
"Jagat-Rhakshaga"  in this country the people are suffering without water. Hence I request you on behalf of this people that you should let out ganga here to make this town prosperous".
The Lord happily agreed and sent Ganga through the mouth of his mount Nandhi. The country side again became green and the people prosperous. The sage was delighted and did pranams to the Lord and asked him to be here as he appeared before him. The lord granted his wish. .
The sage attained 'Moksham' in this place.Even now one can see the water coming from Nandhi's mouth and also there is perennial oozing of water from underneath the Shivalingam in the Sanctum. This is the reason this place is called 'Thiru-ooral'-(in Tamil 'ooral' means oozing)
