Once there was a merchant family living in Mylapore. They had a beautiful daughter. They were proposing to marry her to  Saint Thiru-gnana-sammandhar.
The saint when he was on his tour to Mylam the merchant told him about his proposal. The saint said that he was going to north on a pilgrimage. When he returns back he would tell his plans.
Years passed. One day the girl went to the garden to bring flowers for his father's pooja . But when she was plucking the flowers a snake bit her and she died. The merchant very sadly he did all the cremation ceremonies and he collected her bones and kept them in a pot safely.
In the mean time Thiru-gnana-sammandhar finished his tour of the north and came to Mylam. The merchant invited the saint and told him the painful story about his daughter's death. Hearing the story he asked the merchant to bring the pot in which he had kept the girl's bones.
Sambandar sang a hymn on the deity to give back life to the girl and he sprinkled some water on the bones. The girl came back to life. The saint named her 'Poom-Paavai'
The merchant was very happy and requested the saint to marry her. But the saint refused and told to him 'I am like her father; because I gave her life. Hence I cannot marry her.' So saying Gnana-sambandar went on his way to other Siva-sthalams.
