Legend:
Siva incarnated here in an anthill in response to prayers from the
Devas. Happily Vishnu worshipped Siva keeping him on his chest because
of which he could not breath. Realizing this Siva alighted from
Vishnu's chest and performed a dance for Lord Vishnu in this place.
This dance is called 'Saraba Natiyam'. This is one of the 5 famous
temples commemorating Siva 'thandavam' (dance).
Sri
Vishnu requested Lord Siva to incarnate in this place in the same
pose as he appeared then. Accordingly Lord Siva took abode in
Thiruvarur.
The
tell tale signs of its past dignity of appearance are seen everywhere
. The chariot for the annual procession of Lord Tyagaraja- another
incarnation of Siva- is carried out here. It is the largest of its
kind in india.
Apart
from the temple this place has given birth to the trinity of music -
saints Muthuswamy Deekshitar, Tyagaraja swamigal and Shyama sasthiri.
These saints of the early 19th century have epitomized this place as
the cultural centre of the music world with thousands of musical
compositions each in his own tradition. Several miracles are
associated with the saints whose lives were intertwined with
Tiruvarur bringing great honour to this place. One should visit here
and learn about its art, religion, culture, history and the legends
of this temple. It is a grand living monument.
